I race sailboats and have for over 20 yrs from 420s to lightnings to j/boats.

Since kinetic energy is mv^2, the energy from the wind can’t impart the same energy into the craft. Turns out the craft ends up generating more energy by moving and causing a pressure differential through the sails against the air.
