Basically what separates any woman from “attention whore” and “edgy artist” is whether or not you like what they’re doing. We learned this in high school. A girl shows up to school in a hot new outfit. If you like her, you gush to your friends about how cool she is. If you don’t like her, you roll your eyes and tell

I think some people's cannot stretch their mind that older women can still get the spotlight and even the spotlight of a young demographic. To some, and some are women who are only feminist to the young, old women should just be grandmas and fade away. That's not very feminist.

Jesus, Mary, Christ - when you say it is inappropriate to try to appeal to a young demographic, you are being ageist.

Absolutely. It's sexist and kind of ageist too.

Yeah, I'm willing to be proven wrong on this one, but I can't think of anything she's said that could even really be twisted to mean she pursued her career for the advancement of womankind, and it seems a really weird (and pretty fucking sexist to boot) thing to criticize her about. The idea that a woman wanting to be

Yes. And the people you've mentioned are (ugh) "aging gracefully" in a socially acceptable manner for a woman.

If it wasn't a requirement, why mention it? That's what I'm saying. No patronizing little quip takes away that point, now does it? I'd prefer you not do you, if it means ageism comments, Thanks!

Lindy, as a gerontologist, I can guarantee you that, barring dementia, older people are capable of learning new things. You have nothing to be afraid of in terms of growing older in that regard.

She had the number one selling tour of this decade. I think she has done this twice this millennium and she is worth 1.2 billion dollars. If you added up Cruise and Pitt's earnings and doubled them they still are not worth as much.

Pitt and even wacko Cruise still draw crowds and cameras though. No, it's not the tween crowd, but they're still major stars.

I don't see why it's that much different than the Rolling Stones or Aerosmith doing concerts as they get older. People chuckle a bit but no one hates on them. Likewise, Stevie Wonder was in the wonderful medley at the Grammies, and no one dissed him for being there or wearing dreadlocks even though he's balding.

I really like Jezebel and find the comment posts just as interesting (sometimes more interesting) as the articles. However, I see a lot of double standards and contradictory statements from the writers regarding what's acceptable/ not acceptable. We should all have positive body images and applaud all different shapes

I find this whole article to be a weak critique. If Madonna had an album to promote, then she would have likely performed music from that album. Instead, she performed in an ensemble with other artists, just like a whole bunch of other acts that night. So, why is Madonna the one who’s being singled out as “vamping

Hating older women is such a beautiful value. We have to hang together as young women, after all and confirm Disney princess values of hating older accomplished women, especially those who dare to have the spotlight. Silly women..the spotlight is only for those under 30.

Now playing

I can’t with some of you and your short memories. Madonna’s had that grill for years. I’m not ready to call “grill wearing” cultural appropriation, or at least, I’m not incensed about it enough to get upset, seeing as that every pop girl from Ke$ha to Rihanna to Katy Perry to Beyonce has worn one and no one said boo

There are two crucial differences. One is that Ono was already older when she became famous (she was in her mid 30s when she met Lennon). The other is that she was never a pop musician. She's always been avant garde, which is not as youth oriented.

"I never found she had charm"

"chasing after a demo?"

1. Madonna is recovering from an injury. She must walk with a cane. Snarking on her movements which are hindered by an injury is really fucking gross.

It's happening. You are getting old. You don't get it anymore. You don't know it, but you have become the bearer of old ideas. And I know I'll be there eventually too. I am way more terrified of that not-getting-it than I am of crow's feet and saggy neck-skin.
