A strange thought occurred to me in the middle of Infinity War: Marvel is way better at doing space opera worldbuilding than post-Lucas Star Wars.

I think you forget that the OT was created in a world where the OT didn’t exist. I’m just admiring the creativity and force of will that must have been required to bring the OT into existence where the new movies (like you say) have to work an impossible line between imitation and adding something new.
It seems fitting that Abrams foreground his tribute to Fisher as the sequel moves into production, but I also like the way that he includes a kind word for Rian Johhson and George Lucas. Abrams benefited from the return-to-form narrative after the prequels, so it’s classy of him to signal that he does not want praise…
Exactly what I’m saying. Casino Planet just didn’t do a lot for me. It was hard to watch a second time.
Counterpoint: Cloud City and all the people in it working for a living, bounty hunters, all of the various characters in Jabba’s palace, all the life and lowlives on Tatooine, the Jawas and their crawler and their business, Yavin IV and what it implied, on and on.
Thank you. Meanwhile dillrod and co above are strangely trying to argue that VII and VIII add just as much worldbuilding as the OT, which — if it isn’t just normal trolling — just baffles me that they can see the world in that way.
You’re truly going to sit there and try to claim that VII and VIII add as many new ideas, worlds, rules, people and life to the Star Wars universe as the OT?
Do rewatches of a movie you haven’t seen in forever count because:
Sorry I got to blame him he wrote it ,and directed it.
I wasn’t overwhelmed by Ep7 but it certainly, I felt, introduced some real potential with the cast and setting and the overall design. Admittedly there was too much nostalgia and too little world building in that first movie... but Ep8 destroyed any momentum JJ started (imo).
Throatwobbler Mangrove.
As one of the 5 people who like TTG, I might see this.
Huh?
I once ate 61 pieces of sushi in one sitting. I only stopped at 61 because I didn’t want to break Roger Maris’ home run record.
Sorry, what did TFA go out of its way to fix? I mean, other than “fixing” the question of Rey’s parents and Snoke’s background?
I do not know how that man rights this ship...
I thought I was going to fucking LOVE Downsizing. People said it was dumb and I was like, no, PEOPLE are dumb, this movie is genius! Well. Someone had a great concept and then drove it, or let someone else drive it, into a fucking dumpster. I was on a plane and still contemplated just turning it off to be alone with…
Exactly as dumb and brilliant and wonderful as it could possibly be.
I’m sure the Star Wars stans will come for me, but the Last Jedi was dumb. It was also the first Star Wars movie I’d seen since Return of the Jedi when I was a kid, so I’m probably not in the key demo for the film, but whatever, it was dumb.
