I’m a Bulgarian who immigrated in 1990 and I get that treatment every once in a while still.

Its not cost efficient because its an entire extra process with extra parts. If they wanted to reinforce a 3D printed bike, it would cost absolutely nothing extra other than design time.

I will sometimes do this when I just missed the light and I know its a long one. In that situation there is almost always a car stopped or moving very slowly behind me so no fear of bad rear ending.

Its also only a matter of time until there are boutique battery swap locations that have only fancy and/or new batteries.
