The problem with bringing the camera closer is the distortion cause by the camera lens. the closer the lens is to your subject, the more distorted the image will appear.

The trick i learned was stick your index finger into the water till it hit the top of the rice. the water should go to your first joint-line. Also, microwaving is really easy.
