Yes, if BMW made a limited run of manual M3, and dropped in a couple standard performance upgrades, and no options (neither the 1M or 911R had more than 1 or two options), dealers would get $30k over sticker and they would be worth twice a SMG (or whatever they call it now) in 5 years.

The demand was there because production was so low.  They made 740 1Ms and 300 911Rs for the US. If the production was 10x that they would have had trouble selling them.
