Mod: Sound deadening applied to some of the larger body panels to reduce wind noise and vibration and make the cabin a little more livable at highway speeds.

Non-Mod: Fix broken stuff. Heater broken? Get heat working again. Lights burnt out? Replace the bulbs. Suspension wobbly and noisy? Replace worn-out components.…

This car came with an m20b25, so an s52 only adds ~50 lbs to yield an extra 72hp with significantly more area under the power curve than you’d get with an s14. Plus, an S14 is a $10k+ motor (buy for $3k and rebuild for $7k or buy rebuilt at $10k, choice is yours).

I say an f30 328i or 330i with an automatic and at least the technology and sound package.

Go buy a voltage regulator for less than $5. You can even change it without removing the alternator.

$400-$800 for a DIY steering rack? As of 2 months ago, it was $450 with $150 back when you return your core for a 3.0 turn lock-to-lock z3 rack as an upgrade to the 4.0 turn lock-to-lock e30 rack. Miscellaneous parts will bring the total up to about $350 for a rebuilt rack.

13 Button OBC and relatively crack free dash are nice! Heated seats are awesome too!
