I too think this, but there was a petition, and IIRC it was advertised here on Jalopnik. And it didn’t get the required amount of signatures.
I think it’s got to be case by case. It has to be in a condition worth preserving. Like in this case, in the video, the car appears in sorry shape, so yes, restore it. However if it had been well maintained its whole life and wasn’t falling apart, then preserve it.
I also would like to know.

What about the overall carbon footprint? Manufacturing the car, and manufacturing the diesel. We know manufacturing batteries for hybrids is pretty rough on the environment. We know manufacturing diesel is easier than gas. And we know diesel engines last longer, keeping the car out of a junkyard.
You’ll notice his 4runner doesn’t have all terrains. But really sounds like it’s time for a transmission swap for you ;)
