I meant the people you saw smoking at clubs. You have no idea of what their doctors told them.

Some doctors instruct their pregnant patients not to quit smoking while pregnant if there are other factors at play because the stress of quitting can be worse for the baby than smoking. Something to think about if you’re judging someone smoking while pregnant.

Giving a pregnant woman a glass of wine is literally a world away from holding a manufacturer of a product liable for producing an unnecessarily dangerous product or from serving a noticeably drunk person at a bar (which is covered by statutory dram shop laws, not the common law, and there aren’t statutes allowing for

Yep! Literally every time a white dude is like “if I can’t vote for Bernie I’m not voting!!” I’m like, okay! We’re good without you, so no worries.

He didn’t bring his oldest daughter, who was 18.

I think it should go up to 12 months at least. Then again, when Nebraska forgot to put an age limit on their safe haven law and a bunch of people dropped off teenagers and that one guy brought 9 of his 10 children saying that his wife has died and he couldn’t cope with them, I wondered a bit if maybe there shouldn’t

Wouldn’t this potentially be a concern if she were alienating non-white men, but since she’s not, not really? Like let’s do some basic math - white men are 31% of the population, and Trump ain’t doing so well with women or men of color. She really doesn’t need white men.

That’s amazing and wonderful to hear. Thank you so much for sharing!

Right?? And that’s the thing. I think my career defines me in some sense and my geographical upbringing defines me in some sense, but the really awful things that have happened are nowhere near that level in terms of the impact they have on what I do every day and how I act. They have definitely changed me in huge

This is very good to know. I don’t think my therapist does it but she’s recommended books to me that talk about it so perhaps I should see if she thinks it might make sense for me.

Yes, absolutely. It’s an incredible read and just helped put a lot of my trauma in perspective. I think about 40% of the time I was reading it I was slow crying.

Did you like EMDR? I’ve thought about it since reading about it in the Body Keeps the Score but haven’t actually talked to anyone who’s done it.

That seems to be what the piece suggests - a “person to whom things happen.” That’s how I see myself. I am a person who has been raped. I am a person who has been stalked. I am a person who has scars from being attacked by strangers on the street. I am not a victim nor a survivor. I am a person who’s had a bunch of

No, it doesn’t make a difference if you eat throughout the day or do three meals if the caloric/nutritional intake are the same. The notion that eating throughout the day keeps your metabolism faster was debunked ages ago.

This sounds about right based on my experience. I was obese but then lost 75 pounds seven years ago and have kept it off (well, some fluctuation, but all within a 15-pound range). The first year it took a lot of effort to maintain. Since them...I just don’t pay much attention. Sometimes if my life changes in a big way

Oh yes, and the article explains that exercise is more helpful for maintaining your weight than for losing large amounts of weight in the first place. Not saying in any way that exercise isn’t useful, it’s just a lot less useful for actively losing weight than most people think.

Right, I was just clarifying that they don’t get equal weight. You will not lose much weight if you exercise but don’t actively work to reduce caloric intake. You will lose weight if you reduce caloric intake but don’t exercise. Energy in has a much bigger impact than energy out.
