I am kind of fascinated by how Elizabeth handled Philip’s confession. She’s furious that he betrayed her . . . yet she still trusts him completely. Everything she does (and doesn’t do!) this episode is because she has Philip’s voice in her head.

I also loved how Rosa looked exactly the same in the flashback — same outfit, same hair — while Amy was wearing a terrible suit. (It also reminded me of my favorite sight gag on the show ever — Boyle and Amy showing up to work in the same suit.)
I hated everything about the Holt/Wuntch rivalry, because it was so creepy and bizarre. Holt/Olivia(?) is a joy, though. I love how she matches Holt’s weird gravitas while constantly digging at his age.
YES! I can see it now.
I love Amy and Rosa together so, so much. It might be my favorite friendship on TV right now.
Yes, I think Elizabeth’s expression as Paige walked away was one of regret that Paige had so quickly agreed to continue in the espionage work.
I love his Netflix show — it seems really driven by his curiosity, and by who he finds interesting. And he’s one of those people whose sarcastic and ironic approach to everything turned into sincerity at some point along the way.
I also never felt like Rosa was in any danger, possibly because I’m not sure there’s ever been a Brooklyn 9-9 episode in which I sincerely thought a character was in danger. There are occasional stakes in relationships — I remain worried about Holt and Kevin’s relationship — but physical danger? Nope.
I really love the way Lorelai acts as mediator between Lane and Mrs. Kim (on multiple occasions — it also comes up in season 4). It’s a nice way of showing that she has learned something from her relationship with her own mom, and that she doesn’t want Lane and Mrs. Kim to have that same long-term estrangement.
I liked Pimento with Rosa, because they were so amazingly weird together, but other than that a little bit goes a looooooooong way.
Rogelio was amazing this episode — loved his reaction when River said they weren’t used to living with a famous person, and also loved him telling Rafael he’d overcome his “ambivalence” to him.
Yeah, there was a desperation there that almost seemed overkill in the moment, but after the Michael reveal at the end it made way more sense in retrospect.
It’s cruel to everyone! Cruel to Michael, to come back just in time to see Jane and Rafael together! Cruel to Rafael, who has put in the work to build a real relationship with Jane! Cruel to Jane, who has spent years grieving Michael and putting her life back together and ultimately finding a way to move on!
Don’t forget him breaking into the neighbors’ to play video games, and stealing pictures of Stan’s wife.
I came away from this episode with a (perhaps preemptive) sense of devastation. What is Paige being dragged into? Is it going to blow up in her face? Her disillusionment with Christianity didn’t seem to result in her applying any skepticism to the next ideology she adopted. What happens when things fall apart, or when…
The episode felt a little listless to me — I think it could’ve handled the nine-week time jump better. If we’d seen more of Xo and Donna bonding, or Alba and Rafael freezing each other out, the resolutions of those plotlines would’ve had more impact to me.
I think it’s partly because this season has actually backed away from the most outlandish telenovela elements of the show (evil twins, Rose disguising herself as others, kidnapping, etc.), and focused a bit more on realistic plots (Jane and Alba each navigating love post-widowhood, Xo’s cancer, Petra’s bisexual…
I love how this season of the show is in part about people finding love (again?) after loss. Jane telling both Rafael and Petra that she loved them was amazing — and I loved Petra’s reaction. “Can I say it in Czech?” And the little peck she gave Jane’s forehead before running away, too perfect.
I also thought that, but assumed I was going crazy!
I haven’t yet seen that One Day at a Time episode, but I am dying over the fact that Rita Moreno has appeared as Rogelio’s mother in this and plays Justina Machado’s mother in One Day at a Time. Why isn’t this somehow a JtV plot point? Is it too telenovela?
