Former grocery store worker here. Yup, people are disgusting. I’ve seen them sneeze on, cough on, and lick food. You never, ever saw employees get lunches from the salad bar. The hot soup area was used though(but we never got the bread rolls, only the sealed crackers). We also had to boot a guy out of the store…

The last time I went to Wegmans prior to the pandemic shut downs, I was in an absolute panic and desperately needed food and went to see the hot bar option.

Converting from “serve-yourself” to “you-can-have-as-much-as-you-want-but-we’ll-serve-you” would have been prohibitively labor-intensive. Some cruise ships operate that way- Celebrity and Holland America - and the benefit is that the great unwashed public doesn’t ever get their hands on the tongs.

I’m not sure Mites are the ideal thing to name your small van after.
