I don’t run any farther than 10k, but sometimes I carry a small bottle of water. I use a FlipBelt and I like it—it carries the bottle (a custom bottle, unfortunately), my phone, keys, even a light at night.  Just for light use.

Thanks for the clear and honest self-correction.

This may be the most expensive stock FWD car on the market today, new or used, in the U.S.

    .

Yes. I’ve sometimes thought about this period. I’m a couple of years older than the McCracken, and some of my contemporaries did just as it’s described: typing in programs from magazines, seeing how they worked or didn’t work, learning about computers by hand.

Cool. I see from the license plate (and a Google search) that the Ford 12M is a European model—the K is for the city of Köln (Cologne). I’m a little surprised at the picket fence, because I don’t think they’re anywhere near as common in central Germany as in the U.S.

Vannevar Bush’s “As We May Think” is from 1945.

Yes! I’m glad Bush is remembered today. Add to that J.C.R. Licklider’s writing about the Intergalactic Computer Network and Doug Engelbart’s Mother of All Demos, and you have much of what Clarke mentions.

You are exactly right! England alone has had a few dozen kings and queens throughout history, and most monarchies in the world can say the same. Why shouldn’t Madonna have reigned over pop music beginning in the 1980s with Beyonce having taken the throne afterwards? And we can have many princesses and princes of pop

    Totally charming!

All of these phrases are perfectly fine in the right context, aside from maybe “I’m not smart/talented/brave enough.

This is a core challenge, isn’t it? Can we demonstrate that autonomous vehicles are as safe as human drivers? We actually do have some research on this, in “Driving to safety: How many miles of driving would it take to demonstrate autonomous vehicle reliability?” by Nidhi Kalra and Susan M. Paddock (2016). From the

The harder truth—one I’m still working to accept—is that I probably don’t even need my wallet case anymore. It’s 2021. My phone is basically my wallet.

Armed forces and passport control are the only things that come to mind for me.

    Thanks for the update!

Agreed, the Model S is impressive. The “all day long” metaphor doesn’t seem to quite apply, though. :-)

You’ve outdone yourself this week! In this batch are some real gems (in the rough).

Seatbelt use in the U.S. is higher than it has ever been, with the IIHS reporting 86 percent of drivers belting up. More than half of people who die in vehicle crashes, however, are not clicking it.

It’s the estimate that’s the issue.

Yes. Think about the way that AI systems have learned to play games—there may be some that learn with a human player in the loop, but none that I’m aware of. As long as the AI system can determine or estimate what will happen if some action is taken, there’s no need for the human to be ready to take over if the system
