Yep, the Kovy deal was more than 60% larger than the next most egregious example of these contracts, and for a far longer duration. The league was publicly unhappy with the Luongo, Hossa contracts etc. but decided to wait to find a better hill to die on.

The Devils were punished because, even though those other contracts were obvious bullshit too, the Kovalchuk deal was far more blatant and egregious. They were all playing the same game, the Devils just got a little too cocky with that ridiculous contract.
