As someone who's spent some time in India, I've never seen a fat subsistence farmer or day laborer (and I've seen many). I don't believe in ostracizing the overweight and obese, but it's not useful to deny reality either.

You'd be surprised. Even at the worst times, Beirut has always bounced back and partied on. And in the good times, it has been as cosmopolitan a city as Paris or Istanbul.

Bud was approaching the vehicle, not exiting, so I read the location as outside the station. And Nick definitely got the "check Bud's shop" idea after calling his wife.

No one's mentioned a plot weirdness: Bud's wife tells Nick that Bud is working late at the shop, and Ryan takes a drugged Bud back to the very same shop? Bud is only alive due to goofy coincidence and Ryan being an idiot.
