I think they definitely waited for Ramsay to commit his forces. He mentioned later that they don't have the men for a siege. Sansa and Littlefinger waited until Ramsay played his hand and advanced all of his troops before coming in. If they had shown up any earlier, they could have retreated back to the castle and…
