The payoff wasn’t illegal. The campaign contribution was illegal and frankly as Potter noted, it would take a long time for the FEC to do anything about it and the penalty would likely be a fine. Not much to worry about given Trump’s other legal issues.

Funny, but I could see Trump attempt to argue he couldn’t retain competent council as a delaying tactic. And as silly as it seems, given the deference our courts tend to afford the wealthy, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility he could get some lenience.
