Except that most of the US is covered in land that can be settled, whereas China is not and most people live along the rivers and coast.
It really isn't. These aren't even efficient uses of resources. The only reason they existed was due to a mixture of war, massive population suddenly arriving, (Not a slow and steady growth rate,) and extreme limitations on space. In the US you have thousands of square miles just ready to be expanded into.
