In some places, you’re only eligible to go to one public school according to which school district you live in. At the very least, even if you got permission to go to a different public school, no bus for that school would go to your neighborhood. Maybe there’s a private school that’s closer.

In some school districts, you’re not allowed to change schools. If you don’t like your assigned school then tough cookies. Schools also have a maximum enrollment, so if the other nearby schools are full, they won’t take her.

As far as I’m aware, in most states you don’t just get to pick what public school your kids go to, even with schools in the same school district. It’s normally based on your home address. The Chicago Public School System straight up fines parents who falsify their address to send their kids to the better rated CPS…
