I loved it too! It was super popular all over Latin America
This is great. If you’re interested in Latino/Latin American art checkout the Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative. Starting this month there will be exhibitions in different museums throughout California highlighting the contributions of Latino artists to LA culture as well as shows focusing on Latin American…
Where’s the rest of Maná’s discography?
“If there’s ever been a year when I would be embarrassed to exhibit patriotism, it’s this one.”
And thank you for this great conversation! Hasta la próxima!
I think that’s precisely it, and that same generation has even produced work interpreting Arguedas suicide as the expression of a cultural wound that’s at the root of Peruvianness while disregarding its subjective, psychological and individual aspects.
Thanks, and you’re really well versed on Latin American lit!
¡Gracias! I’ve been here a while, so I’ve had time to practice :)
I couldn’t tell you about the differences between English and Spanish terms (I’m from Latin America and only moved to the U.S as an adult so all my education was in Spanish) but looking around a bit, I found a translation of Carpentier’s prologue to El reino... and the term that’s used there is “the marvelous real”.
But they’re not the same, though: lo real maravilloso is, according to Carpentier, an accurate way to describe Latin American reality (with its supposed exhuberance and mix of the mythical and religious within the everyday) while el realismo mágico is the literary genre/set of literary devices best equipped to…
FWIW the cow also survived!
I don’t know! apparently she and her husband were tending to their animals when the mudslide happened. He tried to grab her but she slipped away, maybe she was looking for him or the animals?? In this video you can see a cow being dragged along with the debris!
Yeah, luckily she made it out with only minor wounds and after a brief stay in the hospital she (at least physically) recovered.
Oh, agreed!
I doubt they will reach out but the Peruvian government requested aid from the U.S. to help people affected by recent flooding and received around $500,000 plus helicopters that were being used to eradicate coca were redirected to help in flooded areas. So, Colombia may still get something from the Trump admin if they…
Yep, Peru and Ecuador have been dealing with this too due to a particularly strong El niño this year. Ecuador was just better prepared http://www.circleofblue.org/2017/south-america/ecuador-touts-flood-prevention-measures-amid-record-rains/
Ha! I hope he was trolling...
What? Jesús (more like heh-SOOS) is just how it’s pronounced in Spanish... it’s not pronounced like that to differentiate it from the “real” Jesus (as pronounced in English). Unless there is a joke and/or I’m missing something here....
By now I think everyone has seen this video of the flooding going on in Peru. I’m just sad I can’t go back to my country right now to help. Any tips on what to do to feel useful from abroad would help!
As someone from the so-called 3rd world, this is worse.
