If you are an animal person, sanctuaries and shelters are a wonderful place to volunteer. Those sweet animals give as much to me (even more) than I do them.
I basically say nothing and commiserate with my SO later. Luckily, we live a 4 hour plane ride away, so visits are a minimum.
I hike up there all the time and have only encountered coyotes and rattlesnakes, both extremely rarely. There are so many people on the trails, including some organized horseback rides, that the wildlife typically stays in quieter areas.
That means I have to now.

True there’s nothing quite like the real thing. But, Kite Hill brand is very good and comes super close. Tal Ronnen is amazing. There is a soft cheese! I’ve only had it at his restaurant, haven’t noticed it in stores but they say it is.
