My favourite was when they’re playing paintball, and the composer just took AIC’s “Rooster” and changed just baaaaaaaaarely enough to not get sued.
“I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” is one of Elvis’ best songs, but the way they use it in Blue Hawaii is so weird.
For those who haven’t seen it, he sings it to his girlfriend’s grandma during grandma’s birthday party. Such a timeless romantic song, and all I could think was “THIS is how they use it?”

1.) The slideshow format has been going on with AV Club for over a decade. If you don’t like it, you should have jumped off, long ago.
I’ll admit I’m fuzzy on details, but I remember Rachel being a very stylized version of an abused teenager - she’s supposed to be like sixteen after all. Chloe’s crush on her never feels like a good life choice, which is what makes it believably teenagery.
“I know you’re supposed to evaluate the show you get, not the one you wanted... they never follow up on what happens after he’s in the show with Gene”
I really hope that one of the byproducts of Barry is that Anthony Carrigan gets roles thrown at him left, right, and center. And meaty roles, too, beyond the “bald villain” stereotype. He steals every scene he’s in as NoHo Hank. I would watch Anthony Carrigan as the leading man in anything.
This show really lost some of the tight plotting and sense of necessity and immediacy in the actions of the story that it had in the first two seasons and even in the first half of this season (until Barry and Gene parted ways). In hindsight, it felt like they were writing to this season-ending moment, which can be a…
The Gene/Jim scenes really did look like a Meisner acting class exercise, I sat right up when I realized what they were doing. So well done.
Really enjoyed your reviews this season!
I thought this episode was really satisfying. Other thoughts:
Labeling her actions homicide is just lazy in my opinion.
That would effectively ruin the show for me. Might as well have Gene Cousinou jump a shark after that.
Yup
Sally didn’t need to channel her past experience to fly into a murderous rage—contemporaneous events (i.e., getting mercilessly strangled by a stranger) and a will to live were sufficient reasons for her violence. Labeling her actions homicide is just lazy in my opinion.
For more Anthony Carrigan Action “Hero,” watch Gotham.
You just know that there’s real people out there who don’t see Homelander as a villain.
Much like an A- is considered “The Whore’s B+.”
It didn't take Disney to ruin the second one, so I believe him.
