You are right that this stuff gets powered by a lot of silly traits in journalism... but I also think Disney is well aware of what they’re doing and that they fully expect that to happen when they make this these winks at representation so they can have their cake while maintaining plausible deniability. Also I

IDK, I’m aware that these things have been identified with gay coding, but I also kind of feel like a lot of this in the eyes of the average viewer comes off more as representing a lot of these characters’ greedy royal decadence vs. the heroes’ underdog gumption.

If they don’t want to get picked apart by think pieces why don’t they just stick to heterosexual stuff instead of playing these games with their gay audience? If they’re going to be heteronormative prudes they should at least be honest about it.

In 1981, the Communist Party of China declared that the Cultural Revolution was “responsible for the most severe setback and the heaviest losses suffered by the Party, the country, and the people since the founding of the People’s Republic.”

I think the apologized for the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution eventually, or at least admitted they were bad ideas.

I appreciate the apology. Don’t worry, I’ve dealt with much worse when engaging with internet discourse.

That wasn’t just “a” joke, it was kind of a running theme through his stand-up career including extensive and casual use of the “F-slur.” He was criticized for it at the time and in the follow-up special he stridently refused to apologize and doubled down on it.

So... does was John Cena reading this statement phonetically? Or does this dude actually speak Mandarin? Anyone know if he actually sounded decent?

I doubt that John Cena has any sort of strong convictions about Taiwan either way and probably barely knew there was a conflict about it and just offhandedly called it a “country” because that’s a normal thing to do when not watching your ass for what will or won’t affect the CCP.

During that war, Israel forcibly displaced 80 percent of the Palestinian population to create a Jewish majority in the newborn state. In 1956, the Jordanian government and the United Nations agreed to build 28 houses in Sheikh Jarrah to house some of these families. They have been living in these houses as tenants

They were people who purchased their land, had it removed from their ownership through legal chicanery decades ago without their knowledge as a result of their ethnicity, and were never asked or directed to pay rent to anyone and are now suddenly being ordered off this land they thought they owned.  Cut the bullshit

Indeed, what they’re doing is really just a little bit of light ethnic-cleansing. So no biggie.

Over-responding to small skirmishes was also the excuse American settlers used to justify the slaughter of Native American tribes...

Does anyone really give a shit about any member of Megadeth besides Dave Mustaine? It’s basically a glorified solo act and kind of always has been, I’m kind of surprised that a founding member was still even remotely in its orbit given the rotating roster of drummers and rhythm guitarists they seem to have been going

He got mad at me for “defending” Contrapoints recently as well, almsot as if he has a pattern of wanting to... be angry at people over small offenses and want them to be exiled from the discourse... almost like a culture he participates in.

I do find that, when pressed, most of the people who insist that cancel culture “Does. Not. Exist.” when pressed tend to explain what they really mean is that they think it does exist but it’s a good thing (“it’s consequence culture actually”) or they want it to exist but don’t think it’s as effective as it should be

I don’t know, that might be true when talking about A-list celebrities but outside of that field there do seem to be plenty of examples of “People just kind of have this fear that otherwise decent people are going to be targeted.” People like that Teen Vogue editor who got fired for some tweets when she was a teenager

“Cancel culture” is an illusion, most frequently conjured up exclusively by people who are utterly terrified of it for no particular reason, but in case you need more proof that it doesn’t exist: Kevin Spacey is back!

This same legal reasoning could be used to stiff people for work they did for studios that go bankrupt for non-scandalous reasons as well, so no, karmic retribution for working with problematic people is not the main lesson from this.
