No, it was picked up in a joint deal with Hulu and Neon with the intention of it going exclusively to Hulu after Neon gave it a (possibly shortened) theatrical run, but then when the pandemic hit Neon sold off their part of the deal.

The Sonic thing wasn’t really a fan campaign though; the trailer came out, people made it known that they thought it sucked, and something like a week later the studio decided the fans were right and announced a retool.

It doesn’t happen because, frankly, most of these directors are over-qualified. Why pay Peter Jackson to make Spider-Man: Homecoming when you can get Jon Watts for cheap.
