Fair--for example EUIV has a backup save file, so you could have a backup file that updates once in a blue moon.  You can savescum it to get around ironman, but i makes you feel dirty doing it, and enough that a committed ironman player can choose to play it clean.

I always felt like a game like ME2 lended itself well to an “ironman mode” where your save constantly saves over itself automatically, so you can’t go back and fix your decisions, like in Crusader Kings 3 or XCOM (i honestly forget if this was an option in the ME series and I’m just forgetting that it existed).
