Definitely did not age as well as I thought it did, even if it is still good. But I think the awkwardness is mostly due to the growing pains Square had(has) making more cinematic games.

The problem was they were only good. For a series like Final Fantasy, that's kind of a misstep. More so when you have to live up to the most popular installment.

When I was eight and got the game, I was amazed by how awesome a character Vivi was. I drew a picture of him that hung on my wall until I was fifteen. A shame, though. He was my first exposure to the Black Mage character design so now any traditional-looking Black Mage that isn't Vivi is tremendously disappointing.

Crisis Core had its moments, but yeah...it's still not a worthy successor.

I think that FFVII remains ingrained in people's minds because of the myriad ways it was different. I'm replaying it now and, you're right, it is very basic in its gameplay and story beats. But everything from the music, to the cutscenes, to the character designs says "easily memorable" in a way FFIX just...might not.
