Its shape exists in virtually every religion or culture. The swastika (by one name or another) is as you said a Native American symbol. It was also used by Christians, in Judaism, Islam, in Greece, etc.
but I still unconsciously recoil from images of it because of how heinous and how iconic it is.
“swastika” is the name by which this symbol is identified in Hindu as well. Should they come up with a new name to appease your inability to recognize that the symbol existed long before Hitler?
It really opens up a whole can of worms doesn’t it?
Off the top of my head and with some help from the inter webs here are a few examples. Granted... several of these would still be considered acceptable only within their respective communities.
I think calling it culturally-illiterate is being kind. Rather I think we don’t talk about swastikas for the same reason we don’t have honest discussions about racism; it’s uncomfortable so we make it taboo.

The arguments in this article are flimsy at best, especially given that this is a single location in one city in the United States. That being said, there is a point in the article that I think lends itself to being misinterpreted:
Just enough cameras and sensors to make 1984s depiction of surveillance seem quaint by comparison.
I see you’ve spent a bit of time today just... telling everyone that D2 sucks balls. Could you elaborate on what it is about the token system that you seem to hate so much?
I will let the spousal unit know! It’s been driving him a bit crazy given all the times he dares to ask me to look up from my phone because “It happened again!”
With regard to this issue; I did not notice it at all. I was in the EDZ running Lost Sector runs, fast traveling fairly regularly and completed the mission without any real issues.
