My sole thought is that Plex can transcode, BUT no plex client exists for linux (media center, NOT meaning linux server). IF you can run XBMC and use PlexBMC (I think addon), it should theoretically work. This might allow for format workaround.

Th Raspberry Pi is ONLY H.264 optimized on board (I think, don't shoot me if I am wrong) and struggles to play other content OOB.
One thing that occurs to me is to NOT skimp on kit when the zombie apocalypse comes.

I use PLEX for my Roku in our bedroom.
It would fail at transcoding, per PLEX app Forums.
The machine is cheap, but the HDD enclosure will dwarf the practicality of the machine. Unless you already have some sort of JBOD enclosure that just works with the machine (distribution dependent perhaps).
"that my CPU is incompatible with the kernel" makes me think you downloaded x86_64 (or x64) instead of x32 (or x86_32).
