I'm amazed that we have the collective hubris to think we should survive at all. It's not like the survivors are going to use their iphones or watch Dancing with the Stars or anything.

@relax_guy: Well, the book was the most overrated piece of tripe I've ever read, so if the movie was anything like it.....

In the early days of my video game career, we used short, looped movies of steel wool burning in animated texture maps for burning effects. It looked so much better than anything we could do digitally at the time ('92-ish). This looks so nice I might have to shoot some new footage and use it all over again!

Wow what a poorly thought out list. Click-through-whore much?

@bob_d: Simple, but effective, method: Hem and haw over which wire to cut, and when you're good and sure which one, switch to the other at the last second. Works every time.

The list of potential homes gets quite pared down if you read the requirements NASA published for decommissioning, display, and transport of the orbiters.

@bawheid: Not so unusual, I suppose, but the poster pic implies that it's not dressed in a spacesuit, which means it doesn't need air?

That was truly haunting. Unfortunately, those kind of militaristic strong-arm tactics seem just a breath away at times. All it would take is a coordinated terrorist attack and some right wing nut jobs to over-react and voila!

@LegacyCrono: Actually, terrorism is pretty damn low on the list of actual threats you should be worried about.

Normally I'm a sucker for books like these, but the quality here seems quite varied. And what does a girl sitting on a rock have to do with sci-fi?

Nice to see Phyllis Diller still getting work.

@FriarNurgle: No need to wait - it's already happening:

Well done! Just needs a little weathering on the paint job (no need for airbrush, just some acrylic washes in the corners and such).

@38thsignal: I recently needed a mini tripod and researched them all, including the Gorilla pods, but settled on a Sunpak one for $0.75 on Amazon, which was perfect.

@kaitlinmarcus: I once worked for a very large media publishing company that posted record profits just before xmas, then gave everyone leftover t-shits as a "gift".

@Lemcott87: Unless you're in 'Frisco. Then it's appropriate.

@kaitlinmarcus: They get a 10 percent raise cake and you're complaining about the $1k icing?

For the hardcore fans (like me), the book "2001: Filming the Future" by Piers Bizony is a must-read. Lots more fantastic set photos, too.

@rsiglesias: I agree that the book explains much that the film sidesteps, but I'm not sure that's a good thing. I felt like Clarke's explanations were rendered almost trite in their seeming unimportance.

@Timmy: If only for the clothes!
