So trying to make fandom more diverse, inclusive and welcoming is 'forcing my views?' Conversations like this help me feel out people and their opinions, which is why most of my interaction was asking questions. I don't hope for confrontation, and I would love if this wasn't an issue at all.

It matters to me because I'm a woman in fandom who is constantly accused of being a fake and because I hate being pushed out of enjoying things that I love by people with shitty attitudes I try to do what I can to change people's perspectives so that every female fan that comes after me has less of this bullshit to

Why is it not enough to you that she likes the way that character looks and has cursory knowledge? Why are you the keeper of Power Girl, who gets to decide who is and isn't a real fan? And what about her liking to dress up as Power Girl and giving Power Girl exposure is 'not bringing anything to the fandom?'

For real.

Good stuff. I replied to try and get you out of the grey, but it doesn't appear to have stuck.

Now playing

If she makes money going to the cons, then she's being offered and accepting a job, just like a booth babe.

I always forget "bury the hatchet" isn't a sex thing

Does she make money going to these cons?

We're pretty hilarious, but it's more of a subtle/performance based cosplay than the other one I have (Sailor Jupiter)

I bought a Nirvana shirt before I bought a Nirvana album because I was 11 and liked the three radio singles I heard frequently.

So booth babes? While some of them go to cons simply to get paid, a lot of them are genuinely interested in the games or shows.

Luckily for me my skin is pretty thick and my wit helps me defend myself, even though ultimately I shouldn't have to defend myself.

I tend to think of it as someone who's standing where I once stood where I was not as deep into the fandom as I am now and I try to encourage them instead of shunning and harassing them

How do you define "fake" geek girls? Is there a "fake geek boys" equivalent?

Sorry, but how does a "fake" gamer girl "cash in" on a trend? Are you suggesting that the women you deem to be "fake" fans are making some sort of profit off of pretending to be interested in something?

trenchant observations. what's the lesson for nerds, then?

I'm sorry, but where can you point to examples of 'fake' geek girls in the past?

Yeah, it really sucks. As a cosplaying lady who's a size 14, there's a whole other level of grossness added to it, in that on top of being told I'm fake and an attention whore, I'm also told that I'm a disgusting whale who shouldn't cosplay.

Yeah, it did hurt people, because it's sexual harassment, bordering on sexual assault. That's not something to make light of or tell someone to just 'get over,' and it's emblematic of a wider problem in geek and nerd culture that something like this happened at a con, which is supposed to be an awesome, fun place for

The rest of the movie would have also had to have been smart and poignant in the same way for that to stick, and I just don't think it was
