I think Merc has their formula down at this point. Make the S class the flagship and make smaller, less expensive versions of that. Other car companies make the small, less expensive version of a car and build up from that point to make their most expensive car.

I didn’t know it existed either this is a nice way to do it.

But is that good or bad? To have one of your least expensive cars look just as great as your flagship? I think it hits the right note.

You’re right about there not being substantial changes, but there were changes none the less. New transmission (7 speed) and a change in the layout of the V6. Other than that just cosmetic changes inside and out. I mean go take a look at the last couple of SLKs (172) and you’ll see even the interior has not changed…

R171 was 2004-2010. This is still the R172 is 2011-Present. New model won’t be out til 2018 with a new interior too, that’s why the current interior is just a minor refresh but it still has the keypad and older design elements.

Mid cycle refresh, not a total redesign.
