This is why, the older I’ve gotten, the more I try to avoid confrontational situations with strangers. Even when what the other person does couldn’t be more inappropriate and assholish.

Yep - my dad is 77 and lives in Florida (sure did think it was him for a hot minute - yikes!), and he has no right to be behind the wheel. But he refuses to listen.  And I refuse to get in a car with him.

Oh, I’d say 20 or 21, when they renew for the first time, that’s a good time to start making sure they still know how to drive a friggin’ car.

It is crazy when you put it that way. I have to re-qualify regularly to operate a fork lift at work, so why not cars?

We had a 95 year old guy crash through a salon parlor across the street from my work a few weeks back and he just laughed it off. Was more important to get his wife to her hair appointment even though he admitted that he shouldnt be driving any more. Three people were seriously injured in the shop that worked there. I

Very true, I would be fine with retests for everyone and just having them be more frequent as people get older. Every ten years until you are 65 and every five thereafter or something like that would make sense. I am constantly shocked at the sheer number of people that drive while on their phone (not talking but

That’s scary about your wife’s granddad.

I’ve always said that if I became the Space Pope and ruled the world, the first thing I’d do is institute mandatory testing every 5 years for 16-65, and every 2 years for 66+.  If you can pass (a real test, not the bs we have now), you keep your license.  If you fail, you lose it.

I met with a client a few weeks ago. He is in his 80s and has macular degeneration and said that from 10 feet away he could only see my basic shape and I had to read out loud the changes I made to a contract for him. He drove to my office for the meeting, but he said it was okay because he only drives on surface

My 90-year old grandmother, who grew up near the Arctic Circle during the Depression

Lord knows I’m a klutz and I’ve definitely had the car in the wrong gear before, but... how on earth did he hit the gas so hard he went THROUGH the storefront????? You don’t need to accelerate that fast to get out of a parking space holy shit

My 90-year old grandmother, who grew up near the Arctic Circle during the Depression and who has had both a stroke and a knee replacement, absolutely refuses to give up driving even though she’s clearly a threat. Nobody from any time period likes being told they’re no longer competent.

I’ve always said that everyone should be required to retake all driving exams every five years or so.

It doesn’t even need to be tied to age.

that generation is so jacked full of cluster b's and narcissists who will freak the fuck out so loudly it will never happen.  Theyll just keep killing decent younger people.

“The driver of the SUV was a 77-year-old man who thought the vehicle was in reverse, when he hit the accelerator and was in drive instead.”

But I love my wife emotionally,

So yes, I realize if my wife found out, which she won’t, it would devastate her and our families.

Not only would it destroy those relationships but damn if she’ll ever trust anyone fully again.
