Just because something is implied does not mean there has to be A pay off. Why would A character driven cop drama suddenly become H.P. Lovecraft? It wouldn't have made any damn sense. The show ended with the characters finding closure and learning to let go which was the point of the damn show.

HBO will only do A season 3 if Pizzolatto will do it. I think they should give Pizzolatto 2 years to make the next season. Some of this season seemed rushed and he wasn't on his A game like last year. He had been writing the first season for 3 years before HBO picked it up.
