Anodization is a process to produce aluminum oxide - the same material that ruby and sapphire are made of - a very hard and generally very durable. It is also prone to tiny cracks which, in that very hard material, become fatigue crack initiation sites - the reason you won’t find many anodized aircraft structural…

Yes on durability, not just cosmetic. Passivation on a metal is done to protect metal from corrosion. While aluminum will passivate naturally with an aluminum oxide coating, it’s not very durable when compared to an aluminum anodization.

The anodization is mostly cosmetic but there is some serious pitting on there that could potentially compromise durability. I don’t know that these parts are subjected to sufficient forces for it to become an issue, but it is certainly a lot of pitting.

OK 1, that’s super cool and thanks for sharing... 2, most of shimano’s stuff pre-11 speed is super cross compatible so you might be able to use an older shimano 105 long cage derailleur, which is already swoopy and silver and looks a LOT like that old xt- fair to say you could paint the front of the parallelogram…
