I kind of adore this thing in its condition. That said, I’m not F-it rich, so blowing 18 grand for this thing seems insanely stupid. 

If it’s anything like the $35k Model 3, it’ll be nigh on impossible to purchase before going away entirely. It’s like a cost-based homologation special. They’re going to offer it for just long enough to claim they did it and move on to the Model 3 Paisley Edition or whatever viral halo car is next.  

And how cheap can Tesla actually make it? $25,000 is roughly half the price of Tesla’s cheapest Model 3. Why waste capacity and effort building something that barely breaks even when you can do the same and make $10k per unit?

I agree. My suspicion is that the “$25K” car will be sold at a loss, or barely break even but is intended to be profitable via a required autonomy subscription. (not arguing whether or not they will actually solve this, just what I believe their intended strategy is)
