Well, faster courts actually favor the server. On a faster court, the serve retains more speed and bounces lower making it much harder to return, hence the ace-fests at pre-2001 Wimbledon (and conversely, Sampras’s lack of success on slower clay).
So depending on your level of interest in tennis you may know this already but I actually just learned about this recently - a lot of the decline of serve and volley can be attributed to the rise of polyester strings (and a slowdown in general court speeds).
