As a longtime NYCC’er, I learned a valuable lesson years ago... The panel’s over when the Q&A portion starts. Leaving at that point puts me ahead of the game for the next long line I want to stand in.

Yup. As I said in an earlier response, my comment re: HOAs and insurance was limited by my own personal awareness of urban scenarios, and I wasn’t considering the larger communal picture in other areas outside of that.

I don’t disagree the overall intent was to give potential homeowners more financial angles to consider, but I’d argue any article providing potential pros and cons on the subject is inherently feeding into the “buy vs. rent” conversation.
Owning OR renting outside urban areas requires the purchase of a vehicle (generally), so it shouldn’t be considered a cost specific to one or the other. You’re absolutely right, of course, although the same could be said for folks who decide to rent outside an urban center due to budgetary or other concerns. I should’ve been clearer in my statement, and said owning a car has zero business being factored in as a hidden cost of homeownership specifically.
