You’re not alone. I just commented similarly. It is a bit troubling McConaughey believes Flagg is at the top of the story’s power structure. Is it too much to hope that’s simply because no one in his camp has bothered to read the entire series? (McConaughey himself doesn’t strike me as much of a reader.)
