His message is squarely aimed at elderly white people.  Gone with the Wind is iconic particularly with that demographic.  The dog whistle is lagniappe.

Maybe someone from the industry can chime in, but I can’t shake the feeling that these pics that fall into the Uncanny Valley do so in many ways because the crew is working on desktop computer screens and never gets to see “dailies” ie footage blown up movie screen size - until it’s too late. Side note, that top picture is... weird. It pushes my Uncanny Valley button something fierce. If it weren’t for the second picture later in the article, this could have been reviewed as a CGI animated production and I wouldn’t have batted an eye.
