Generally speaking, the gate agents are overworked and don’t have much patience for people wasting their time asking for upgraded seats, especially with the number of airline elites who will raise hell that they didn’t get an upgrade cleared on your behalf.

With everyone working remotely, it is actually easier than ever. I usually take a later & longer lunch followed by a 20-minute nap. Then I work a little later. It is very civilized.
