There’s some nice texture to the pre-horror sections. Didn’t have room to say so in the review, but I appreciated the art direction of the characters’ houses, which aren’t quite as picture-perfect as this stuff is often made to look.

Mel Brooks is 90! Let poor man retire in peace!

Every single one of those movies is at the very least worth watching. Lee has had some misfires, but at this point his average is pretty great.

Plot twist- He’s just a guy with Marfan Syndrome.

Jesse: Wait a minute, I know I gave this movie a grade. What’s going on here?

Right from the jump, Lee gracefully walks the line between acknowledging the horrific history of the KKK and treating the Klansmen themselves as figures of ridicule.

Good and bad, he’s got one of the most fascinating filmographies of any director working today.

David Duke (Topher Grace)

Did they approach Billy Joel about contributing to the soundtrack with that “Black-ack-ack-ack-ack-ack-ack-ack-Klansman” sing?

I’m happy to see Dowd praise Bamboozled in this piece. It’s definitely a mess, but I think about individual scenes and moments all the time.

She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do The Right Thing, Mo Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Crooklyn, Clockers, Get On The Bus, 4 Little Girls, He Got Game, Summer Of Sam, Bamboozled, 25th Hour, When The Levees Broke, Inside Man.

They can’t snub Sorry To Bother You if they’ve never seen it or even heard of it.

The Dark Knight didn’t get a Best Picture nomination and the Academy has been spending 10 years now trying to correct that mistake. But with 10 available slots, if a blockbuster is good enough to be considered it will probably make it at this point. There’s no need to pander.

I thought the point of expanding the BP nominees was to give notoriety to the mass-appeal films that nevertheless managed to also be good?

And the Oscar for “Most Epic Summer Vibe” goes to...

Also lets them throw an award at Black Panther to distract from the inevitable snub of Sorry To Bother You.

This makes no sense because of movies like Batman, The Dark Knight, Titanic, JAWS, Lord of the Rings, Mad Max: Fury Road, etc. It is entirely possible for a movie to be both incredibly popular and yet considered to be artful enough to get in the running for Best Picture. It just doesn’t happen often because it’s very
