STUPIDITY us definitely on your side!

Yeah I didn’t mean to imply that it was a poor choice, but in my house (and my teenage heart) it was heresy.

I was never able to actually run my offense the first two years because we didn’t have the players. What everybody saw the first two years was not a Hue Jackson offense

To be fair, it’s not ridiculous to prefer Unitas to Montana- it’s not unreasonable to put them as 1a and 1b on an all-time list a la MJ and Lebron. For the era he was in, Unitas’ numbers are unreal.

That being said, Otto Graham is always going to be my guy.

I grew up in a 49ers house in the Bay Area during their golden age - I was 7 in the 1981 season - and was an SI subscriber and avid reader from about sixth grade through high school. I read Dr Z’s reports and rankings with great interest. He was an old-timer, and preferred Unitas to Montana, but he would give the

My favorite Dr. Z article was his cranky recitation of why and how he had gotten thrown out of the Super Bowl MVP voting pool. The Super Bowl was Super Bowl XXV, with the New York Giants squaring off against Buffalo for the first of their four consecutive Super Bowl defeats.

Sad news. I grew up with Dr. Z and greatly looked forward to the annual SI pro football preview issue, back when SI was still packed with great sportswriting. I read The Thinking Man’s Guide to Pro Football in my school library, it was the gold standard of football writing.

Dr Z was doing the SI weekly NFL power rankings before he was felled, always amusing and insightful.  He seemed big on charting plays and could describe objectively why X was a better RT than Y.  I missed him.

I’ve told this story here before, but in memory of Dr. Z, I think its worth a re-telling. In a roundabout way, Dr. Z lead me to become a Deadspin reader/commenter.

Was the monkey wearing the diaper, or was Tomsula? I MUST KNOW.

He’s gonna win Comeback Player of the Year and I’m gonna go shower in liquid nitrogen when it happens.

I thought the exact same thing. And I’d be completely fine with anyone going with the narrative of “comeback from injuries.” That seems like a perfectly valid story to me even in the wake of the rape allegations.

I honestly thought that “what he went through” was referring to his history of injuries, before he started going into specifics about accusations and juries and whatnot.

Tucson, Arizona has a metro area of nearly a million people. It’s a city.

Cal is in Berkeley which is a large town. It’s part of the bay area, but it is NOT a major city and not that close to SF even the way traffic is these days. Palo Alto is small too and super sleepy and far from SF. It’s a college town, not a city. disagree here.

Timelapse of the reddening:

They really need to bring back the Deadspin Hall Of Fame: Cardinal Numbers, All Takes Matter and the Reddening of Gruden are all first ballot..

we’ll get here eventually:

I have to admit, the best bit on the internet right now is Deadspin making Gruden’s face redder in the hero image for each subsequent article you post about him.

I bet it was justified. Jaguars players know poor bortleservice when they see it.
