I think the mistake is thinking he’s deliberately manipulating anybody. He’s just doing what he does naturally, and the current state of the American electorate is one in which it happens to work. It’s completely Pavlovian. He’s learned, without any conscious thought, that behaving a certain way gets him things.

In fairness, there is a lot of supporting evidence that it does work.

Yeah, it’s really just an artifact of the way the game creates and spools out stages. If anything, it happens because there was nowhere else to store a “hidden depository of data” and the programmers needed to be super-efficient in managing space. The whole game takes up 32 kB, which is insane.
