I’ve really enjoyed portable mode, but not for the sake of taking it anywhere. It’s just a more relaxed kind of gaming for me.

It may not be much more than an HDMI out, but it does more than just carry video. The dock also incorporates a USB hub, which is particularly important if you prefer to use a LAN adapter for online gaming and services. And the Switch obviously wouldn’t be able to charge from a USB-C to HDMI cable.
