I have a beam + 2 gen 1 plays for surround (5.0). I would suggest this route as a gateway to eventually end up with (5.1) set up. Save up for the next black friday sonos special and save yourself some money if you feel you need the sub after the 5.0 set up.

yeah im in the same boat and very annoyed that the $700 playbar was left out of the party

actually that won’t work either. i found out that Airplay 2 is dependent on the main home theater speaker in the group (either your playbar or playbase) and not the surround speakers. So if you have a playbar (like me) then you are SOL, but if you have a playbase which was updated then you are good.
