Normal is not one size fits all. In my area, amongst people of my social class, during my formative years, it was absolutely normal to say fag or faggot. All the time.

Hear, hear. Socialists shouldn’t alienate these people for their entirely founded fears, either. Not if they want to win, anyways.

How confident are you that there are still vast red rural and suburban areas that believe in traditional values? It seems that they believe in those values only insofar as they don’t inconvenience them at all.

Whether Trump is conservative or not is besides the point. His voters undeniably are. And it seems as though they’re abandoning their conservative bona fides in this culture war.

The problem for the right wingers is this: if they succeed in making outrage comedy verboten, then they will lose one of their most common alibis.

Özil is a third-generation German. I’m sure he still has distant family in Turkey, but it’s likely that all of his parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and first cousins are in Germany.

Emre Can reportedly refused to meet with Erdogan. You can’t expect all people to do the right thing, but it shouldn’t surprise a German that he’s going to get some criticism for this.
