Seriously, my GTI does this now when I have even a mild weight in the front seat and the seatbelt icon blinks incessantly. And I roll with my rears split, golf clubs on one side and my work bag on the passenger side, so there is nearly always a weight on the rear seats.

They have no incentive to. The people making the calls are incentivized (via big bonuses) to cut all “nonessential” costs in order to post bigger profits to their investors every year. Putting aside money cuts into profits.
