Stick with it. The first few chapters of The Fifth Season take a little settling into (particularly that use of direct address), but the jumpy narrative calms down, and it’s a rewarding read.

YouTube, especially the collections of family histories from the DVD extras, is a great resource as well.

Unfortunately it seems like somewhere in season six or seven, probably during season six, they realized they weren’t able to fill GRRM’s shoes, got frustrated, and have started phoning it in. These days characters just do what the plot needs them to do and are only in focus when they’re important to the plot.

Speaking for myself it would have been great if the showrunners had remembered why GoT became a massive hit in the first place; well-drawn characters with believable and exciting arcs, and a focus on those characters rather than big headline-grabbing set pieces.
