even though i like the paint, i stripped the paint off of mine because i wanted that groovy metal and rubber and leather look- which i like! feels very old school. Pretty sure that frame will still be kicking in a couple hundred years, if i can keep it dry.
i have that bike with a solid fork- bought it for 700$ or so in 98, and i’ve put at least 10,000 miles on it,. mostly as a slick tired commuter though.
Try a Trek Antelope if you want something old and bombproof- a surly LHT 26"(or troll) if you want something new and bombproof.

At risk of raising prices, I’ve had a lot of luck fixing up old Trek Antelopes- essentially they are the exact same thing a surly LHTs- sturdy, highly versatile mountain frames that are practically indestructible and who are pretty stable fully loaded with gear. You can still find them in Colorado for between 100-300$
