It’s not abysmal. It’s just not quite as good as the larger phones. Also we are all surrounded these days with a dozen convenient options at any time to add some juice to the battery. Portable power packs of all sizes, the lighting cables in the car, a wireless charger at the desk, etc.

I agree with that. The square design makes way more sense than round for a smartwatch (and it was wise for Apple to optimize around usability). But there is no good reason for it to dominate mechanical watches. Round looks better and makes more sense functionally for those.
