I want to read more books about people kind of keeping themselves kind of in check, precisely because they are what most people experience. Jean Rhys wrote beautifully about this very topic. I find the complicated realities and day-to-day struggles more interesting than the “addict hits bottom, sees the light, gets…
As someone who struggled with alcohol abuse I read this book when it first came out. It’s really great. It’s true that there is something freeing about being a complete and total mess (as a woman), when you are told you are supposed to be nice, pretty, and demure. I think she really captured that in her story.
There was a This American Life story about it: http://m.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives…
Hahahaha... at least your mom had some common sense. I think we owned more than one set of these, even.
I don’t have experience with painkiller addiction, but I did become dependant on benzodiazapines (drugs like xanax, klonpin, valium, etc) after being legitimately prescribed them for anxiety. (IMHO these are just as addictive as painkillers and really need to be more well-discussed, but that’s a topic for another…
Thanks! I hope Oakland is still staying cool and not just becomng SF junior...
I lived over on 54th street near San Pablo ave. There was a good bakery and Mexican place over there. I lived there barely 6 months, though— I had been living in San Francisco for three years, then I tried to make a go of it in Oakland for a while, and then wound up moving overseas for various reasons.
My husband read somewhere (maybe Reddit, don’t judge) that hiring Justin Lin was also a jab at Fukanaga, something like “well, I can just find another Asian just as good as good as you!”. The thoery seems really suspect IMHO, but regardless of his strategy, it’s not working, because this season is soooo bad. The first…
Yeah there was an uptick after the riots, too. Some people think it’s because the looting of a pharmacies destabilized the illegal drug market (which is not very stable in Baltimore to begin with). Some people think that the cops let things go to shit in retaliation of being prosecuted.
Yep. Like I said to another commenter. I live in a working-class neighborhood in Baltimore. Not the worst of Baltimore neighborhoods, but not the best either. My neighbor was mugged outside of his own garage a few months ago. Still, if I had a gun, it would be more likely to be stolen (since most home invasions happen…
I live in working class part of Baltimore (you might have heard of it?). Our city has had almost 150 murders since January. Having a gun would in no way make me safer. It’s way more likely that it would be stolen, since most home invasions happen when someone isn’t home, or it would be weilded by someone with more…
Trip advisor is like any paper guide book: Great for hotels (nice to see pictures, especially), OK for stuff to do, but do NOT follow their recs for places to eat.
I’m 33 and I don’t really notice it unless someone points it out. I never knew people considered it terrible until it started making the news a couple years ago.
Ha! We made basically the same comment within 2 min of each other.
This American Life did a segment on vocal fry a little while ago. Apparently they get lots of comments about their young reporters with vocal fry.
I’ve become fond of them, but I also think they make me look like a middle school art teacher.
Oh man, I hear you. I used to teach (in Southern China, about the same latitude of Miami) in classrooms with no A/C. Sometimes the temps would get up to 95 degrees, with full humidity. The locals were used to it and would barely break a sweat, but my Irish genes were really not made for that climate. Red face,…
My travel uniform, especially for long flights is: leggings, a jersey tank dress, a hoodie or long cardigan, a scarf, and... Dansko clogs, which I know are HIDEOUS, but I got a hand-me-down pair from a friend a few years back, and they are comfortable enough to wear on log slogs through the airport, and easy to get…
I love people who go on and on about clean eating, including instagramming their organic wines and locally made beers. Alcohol is a Group 1 carcinogen, artisinally made or not.
